Background:

Spirit can’t remember much of his youth. But what he does remember is screaming and crying for mercy. He can remember the sight of blood. The sight of dead bodies lying all around him. He was six when this happened. At least he believes he was six. Again, he doesn’t remember much of that time.

He can remember waking up in a forest with blood and scratches all over his body. He can remember sitting with his back against a giant tree and looking to the sky as he feels himself getting cold and the need for food getting stronger and stronger. But no matter how much he tries he can’t get himself to move. He tries his hardest but to no avail. He sits in that one place for three days just watching the sky. When he could finally move, he was stiff and sore. He walked through the woods and came to a lake. There he washed himself of the blood and made sure his scratches weren’t too deep. From there his memory is perfect. Well, almost.

Spirit stays by the lake for a few days gathering materials that he will need for his travel. He gather fruit that he can eat and makes crude water containers out of thick tree branches. Doing things that he never thought he knew how to but a small voice in his head tells him that he can and helps him when he can’t figure certain things out. Once he has everything he needs, he packs it into a trench coat that he found lying on the ground in the woods while out looking for things to eat. The trench coat is huge on him but it gives him a sense of security. Once he has everything that he thinks he needs, he ventures out of the forest into the world.

He travels to many places, places that he doesn’t know the names to at the time but was drawn to by a strange need to be around people. He would stay for a few days in every city he went to. He would sleep in alleys or on benches or just hunker down outside of the city with his back against a tree and the trench coat draped over him like a blanket. He got mixed reactions from people. Some would give him small coins, he had no idea what they were or what they were used for but he would put them in his trench coat none the less. Others would sneer at him or kick at him. He didn’t mind either way because being around people felt right. And it kept the small voice in his head away.

He was traveling one day, after leaving the last city he was at, and came to a small town that was dark and gloomy. He didn’t want to stop here but he had no choice. He was tired of walking and was hungry. He had to rest and see if he could find some food. So he enters the town and immediately senses bad things but he puts that to the back of his mind and continues in. He finds a little alley and sits behind a small crate so that he can sleep.

“What is this? Such a little thing to be in a town of such big monsters.” Comes a voice in the darkness making, Spirit, come awake with a jolt. He looks around to see if he can find where the voice came from but can’t see a thing. The small voice in his head tells him to run and from experience he knows the voice is right. So he starts to run as fast as he can. But being only ten years old, he is still quite small, so he can’t run very fast but he can dive under and into small openings. He gets out of the alley and into a street and runs as fast as his little legs will take him. He reaches what looks like to be a town square. There are many people all around but none seem to care that he is there and that he is running. “Oh, poor boy. No one to look after you? To take care of you?” comes the voice from behind him. Spirit, turns around fast and spots the man who spoke and looks at him. He looks to be nothing special but he is big. Spirit, begins to slowly back away, which he knows is wrong but it is the only thing he can do. “You actually think you’re going to get away? How cute and sad at the same time. My poor boy, you’re dead. Even if you don’t realize it.” The man says with a vicious smile. He strikes out at, Spirit, with his right hand and Spirit does not flinch because he accepts that he is about to die.

“Not so fast!” comes a loud scream from somewhere behind him. But, Spirit, doesn’t open his eyes until he hears a small gurgling sound. When he opens his eyes he sees the man who was about to kill him, lying on the ground with blood filling his mouth and his eyes clouded over with death. He looks around to see what happened and he spots a woman standing behind the man with bloody hands. She turns and sets a pair of beautiful violet eyes upon him and smiles kindly to him. “Are you ok, boy?” she asks him. Spirit, just stares at her. Never had he had someone protect him before. No one to actually ask him if he was alright or hurt. He had been around many people before but he had never actually spoke to them. He found it oddly weird to hear words directed at him. He nodded slightly and then black took over his consciousness.

Spirit, woke a few days later. How he knew it was a few days and not hours he could never figure out. He put the question aside because he figured it would be answered at some point in the future. He looked around the room where he was presently laying in and spotted pictures on the wall and a fire place with a fire blazing in it. Beside the fire place he spots the woman who saved him. He looks her over to judge if she is a threat. When he does he sees a woman who stands over 5 feet tall with long black hair. But he sees no threat in her and the voice in his head is quiet. He sits up slowly. “You should take it easy. You were dehydrated and your feet were bruised and bleeding.” She says as she turns her violet eyes on him and smiles. “I’m….fine.” Spirit says softly and looks away from her. “You have nothing to fear here. This is my home. This place is called Crimson Nights. And my husband and myself are the head of the house.” She says and smiles to him.

Spirit, looks at her wearily because in his experience most people will only hurt him. “I don’t know you. How am I supposed to feel safe?” he says to her as he looks her in the eyes. She smiles at him and walks over to him then sits beside him. “I am, Sinclair Covington.” She says to him. “And you are?” she ask softly. He looks at her then looks away. “Spirit” he whispers. “That is a nice name for one with such will power as to walk until his feet bled.” She says smiling. “Well let’s get some food in you, shall we.” She says softly and holds her hand out to him. Spirit, takes her hand wearily but wanting to trust her and follows her.

Spirit joins the Crimson Night house from that night forward. Sinclair adopts him as her child and gives him the Covington name. He is now known as, Spirit Covington. He is hesitant around her husband, Blaine, because of his size. To him the man is huge but he looks up to him none the less. Because he wants to grow strong like him to be able to protect the ones he cares about. He soon learns to fight and take care of his responsibilities around the house. He learns all kinds of amazing things from his mother and father. And even meets his big sister, Livia Covington, who is very sweet to him. He finds that the people of the house are very nice as well. But he stays close to his mother and father. He finds other people hard to trust no matter how nice they are.

Five years after Sinclair took him in, he is a skilled fighter with his hands and a knife. His mother and his father have taught him much over the years but recently he has been keeping his distance from them. For some reason he feels a bit off. The voice in his head that had been quiet since he joined the family was back. And it was much louder than it used to be. It was telling him to do things that he would never do. Kill people for other reason than they looked at him the wrong way. He couldn’t stand people to stare into his eyes for very long either. Every time they did he got the urge to kill them. So he has been isolating himself for the past few days until he gets over what is happening.

"Why are you running? It would be so easy to kill them all in their sleep." Spirit shakes his head as the voice rings in his mind and sighs. Not wanting to answer the voice because he knew it would only make it worse. The voice continued to chant those words for hours as Spirit trained with a new weapon that had been given to him a few years ago. It was a sword from ancient Japan. It was incredible and beautiful. It was crafted by Muramasa Sengo, who was known for his beautiful yet deadly blades. It measures twenty-six inches long with a circular guard. The blade’s hamon makes it look as tho the blade was scorched by flames. And Spirit loves the sword. He carries it with him almost all the time.

One night, Spirit, was collecting firewood to burn in his camp fire when he felt a burning pain going up his spine, making him fall to the dirt and cry out. It didn’t last long but it left Spirit without breathe. He stood slowly after he had caught his breath and picked up the pile of wood again and began to walk back to his camp. Hoping that by now his fire hadn’t burnt out. When he reached his camp he came up short as he saw his Mother and Father sitting close to each other, which is something they did often, beside his fire. They just looked at him as he stood there without a word. To tell the truth, he couldn’t think of anything to say. It had been almost two weeks since he had visited them. So he adopted silence because he knew he was in trouble. He walked over and put a few pieces of wood onto the fire then took his sword from his waist and leaned it up against a nearby tree and sat down across from them. “We were worried about you.” his mother said softly. Spirit looked at her and opened his mouth to say something but closed it as he saw the look in her eyes. That look told him she didn’t want a response. She just wanted him to listen to what she had to say. He looked to his Father then and saw that his Father was going to let her do the talking.

“I won’t scold you, sweetie. I think you’re doing this to protect us from something. What that something is I don’t know but I hope if you get into trouble, you will come to us for help.” She says softly as she looks at Spirit and smiles lovingly at him. Spirit sits still as he hears what she says and when she smiles at him, all he wants to do is go to her but just as that thought goes through his mind the voice begins to chant once again. "Kill them!! Feel their blood between our fangs!" When the word “fangs” was said, Spirit, became confused. He wasn’t a vampire. He was a normal human being. Granted he was a little stronger than most of his age but he did do a lot of training with his Mother and Father. He could also smell things most couldn’t but other than that he was normal. Well except for the voice in his head. "Let me show you why you are different." The voice says. And as those words ring through, Spirit’s, mind he begins to feel the burning pain go up his back again. But it didn’t stop this time. It continued up his back to begin spreading all over his body.

Spirit, cried out in pain as he fell to the ground. Wet popping sounds coming from his joins as they shifted into new positions. His rib cage breaking and reforming, his hands and fingers turning in as claws sprung out forming paws. Spirit, takes deep breathes as the pain fades but when he stands up he notices something is wrong. He looks around and notices his Mother and Father are standing. His Mother with shock on her face and his Father looking at him wearily. He tried to ask what was wrong but when he did all that came out was a bark. That confused him even more. But something scared him even more then what had happened. The voice in his mind was now clear as day. He could almost feel another presence in his mind, in his body. When he looked to that part of his soul he saw nothing but black. Anger and violence coiled up into a raging mass. When he looked at it something looked back at him. With bright yellow eyes. "You can see me now? Can you feel me?" The thing asks. “Yes. What are you? What am I?” Spirit asks softly. "You are not human nor vampire. You are of wolf ken." Spirit nods and goes back to reality as he hears his Mother’s voice.

“Spirit, are you there?” she asks and looks at him but she doesn’t see the young man she had been raising. She sees a white furred werewolf. When she spots the black patches of fur on the tip of his tail and his right paw she smiles softly. The wolf looks back at her and bobs his head up and down. Spirit wants to go to her but he fears what the other part of him will do. The other part of him wants to do nothing but to jump at her and bit her, to feel blood between their fangs. Spirit shakes his head and looks back as her. “Its ok, sweetie. Just try to keep yourself in control for now.” She says softly to him. After she said that is when Spirit lost consciousness.

Spirit woke up sometime later to find himself in his room. He looked around but he didn’t see anyone. "They aren’t here." Says the voice in his head and Spirit jumps slightly. “You said I’m wolf ken. Does that mean I’m a werewolf? I’ve read about them. They are nothing but mindless beasts.” He says softly. "You are a werewolf. And those books were made by the vampires. We are the sworn enemy of vampires. We kill them." When Spirit heard this he shook his head. “No. I won’t kill any of my family. I love them too much to cause them suffering. You won’t get your wish in this. I will kill us both before I let you hurt them, understood?” Spirit asks the other half of him. "……..very well. I will not make you kill them. But others, they will die if they attack first. And they will. They see us as enemies." the voice says. “I can live with that I guess. I don’t like being attacked anyways.” He says and closes his eyes to sleep again.

After his first shift and the agreement he came to with his wolf half, Spirit, has been living somewhat peacefully. He has learned over the years to control his shifts, thanks to his Mothers help. His Father taught him how to rein in the beast and control it. Spirit, has gained almost full control. But when he loses his temper his wolf takes over and kills anything in its path.
