I slowly opened my eyes to the ringing of my alarm clock, the sound blaring throughout the room getting louder as I woke up. “Just a few more hours!” I whispered into my pillow. However, it refused to stop drumming throughout my ears. I wearily crawled out of bed, reached over and turned it off with perhaps, a little more force than was necessary.
"Kyle," my mother called from downstairs, "Dean and Juliette are coming over shortly; it's the big day, and get ready!"
I dragged myself into a standing position and headed to my wardrobe, picked out my clothes with one eye open and trudged down the hall to the bathroom. After quickly swapping my clothes, I headed down towards the kitchen, passing Mum’s Marill on the way, I knelt down and patted it on the head and it nuzzled my hand, I smiled and continued, following the smell of bacon cooking to the kitchen.
Mum was standing in the Kitchen over the stove, “Good morning.” I said pleasantly, peering over her shoulder into a pan, the source of the delicious smell.
“Morning dear,” she replied, “Sit down, I’m cooking breakfast for you and your friends, are you excited?”
“Sure am! I get to start my journey with my first Pokemon, make new friends and compete in gym battles!” I blurted out excitedly, “I can’t wait!”
I heard a knock at the front door, “They’re here!” I shouted jumping out of my seat, “I’ll get it!” I sprinted to the door, and opened it to see Juliette smiling vibrantly with her hands on her hips, she was wearing a dark purple pleated skirt and a white, off-the-shoulder t-shirt which showed a little of her stomach when she moved. Next to her, Dean was leaning nonchalantly against the door frame in baggy jeans and a black print shirt of a band no one’s heard of.
“Hey guys, glad to see you both came prepared. Come in” I said motioning for them to come inside, trying to conceal my real excitement at what today will hold.
“Oh dude, is your mum cooking bacon? Alright!” Dean asked, running to the kitchen, nearly knocking me over in the process.
“Looking good as always aye Kyle?” Juliette said smiling as she brushed past me and glided, with her hands behind her back, into the kitchen.
I followed Juliette into kitchen and noticed Dean already pestering my mum for the currently half cooked bacon. Immediately, Marill spotted Juliette, he jumped and ran to her leg, hugging her with his stumpy arms. Juliette kneeled down, picked him up, and hugged him tight. Marill let out a cry of excitement and nestled into her arms. “How are you Marill?” she asked giggling.
“Marill, Marill!” the Pokemon replied happily.
“He’s always liked you, you know!” My mum chuckled. “Alright, the bacon is ready, sit down everyone.”
“Good taste!” Juliette replied grinning as she placed Marill gently back on the ground, before taking the seat opposite Dean.
“Oh boy, you’re a wonderful cook Miss H!” Dean smiled, sitting down eagerly.
I quickly sat beside Juliette as Mum placed plates of bacon in front of each of us, Dean started wolfing it down as soon as the plate touched the table and I could see Juliette staring wide-eyed at him, a little shocked.
Mum crossed to the cupboard and grabbed some bread, “Eat up you lot.” She called to us over her shoulder.
Mum placed the bread on the table and we all dug in, “So, what Pokemon are you guys picking?” I asked taking a slice of bread.
“I’m thinking I might pick Charmander, that’s such a cute Pokemon!” Juliette replied excitedly.
“How ‘bout you Dean?” I asked taking a mouthful of bacon.
Murmurs and grunts came out of his mouth as he tried to speak; he swallowed his mouthful of food and added “I’m not sure, I’m undecided, I dunno…” He paused, “we’ll see what happens.” he added laughing.
After a short while, we finish eating our meal and head towards the longue room and talking excitedly about our upcoming adventure, soon we hear the door knock again.
“About time, they’re here!” cheered Juliette as she jumped up from the arm of the sofa where she had been perched precariously, straightened her skirt and nervously fixed her hair.
“Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!” exclaimed Dean who was sitting, literally on the edge of his seat.
“Finally it’s time; we’re going to become trainers!” I said standing slowly.
My mum opened the door and let a middle aged man dressed in a white lab coat over some hi-tech looking gear and he carried with him a silver suitcase. As Juliette, Dean and I stood before him nervously at attention, eagerly waiting the moment that would begin our journeys as Pokemon trainers. The man placed the suitcase on the table in front of us and smiled.
“Hello, my name is Alfred, I’ve been sent here to give your first Pokemon” the man said officially, opening his case, inside were nine pokeballs.
“Shouldn’t there be ten pokeballs?” Asked Dean.
“Yes – someone’s done their homework! But I have just come from seeing a young boy by the name of Riley.” Alfred replied. I felt myself tense up at the mention of Riley’s name and I saw the others shoot me concerned glances; it was no secret that he and I did not get along.
“Now I’m not going to tell you what pokemon are what, it’s a random draw, what you pick is what you get so, good luck!” Alfred stepped back from the case and we all glanced at each other before stepping forward to choose our very first pokemon.
“Ladies first!” called Juliette, smiling cheekily as she stepped out in front of us.
“Sure.” I said motioning for her to proceed, but Dean just rolled his eyes and sighed with exasperation.
She smiled reaching in and grabbing a pokeball, she took a step back staring at the ball as if she thought that if she looked away it would disappear.
I glanced at Dean and nodded him to go first, he nodded back in acceptance. He reached in and grabbed a ball and took a step back.
My turn, I looked at the remaining pokeballs then closed my eyes, reaching in slowly, I grabbed one. I opened my eyes to see I grabbed the very middle ball.
“Very well.” Said Alfred, “Now that you’ve picked your pokemon, let’s see what you all got, hey?”
“Go, pokeball” shouted Dean.
The ball hit the floor and opened up, a light shone out the ball and a pokemon appeared in front of us, a Poochyena.
“Oh, that’s adorable!” My mum cooed.
“Yes, a Poochyena, excellent!” cheered Dean.
The Poochyena gave a small squeal of a battle cry and pawed at the ground.
“Pokeball go!” myself and Juliette screamed in perfect unison. Bright light shone from our pokeballs and two pokemon appeared.
